Noodler’s Ink – Ellis Island
Pen: Lamy Al-Star – Graphite – EF nib
Ink: Noodler’s Ellis Island Blue Black
Paper: Rhodia dotPad, No. 16 – Top Spiral Bound
Notes: I should probably stop using EF nibs for ink reviews, but this ink was just so smooth in the Lamy EF that I decided to continue anyway. Noodler’s Ellis Island Blue Black is a Fountain Pen Hospital exclusive ink, so if you like what you see, you know where to go. The color is very interesting for a Blue Black, because this one has a hint of teal. It reminds me a bit of Rohrer & Klingner’s Verdigris, but this ink is a bit darker. The ink also has an interesting smell to it, almost like licorice. Ellis Island Blue Black is nothing crazy, but it’s a good smooth ink. I’ll definitely use up the rest of the sample I have, but it’s just not unique enough to purchase a bottle.

Looks good! Do you have 54th Mass? If so how does it compare?
Thanks! I have a sample, but I have yet to check it out yet, I’ll be sure to review it / compare the two when I do.
Good deal I was going to send you a sample if you didn’t have one.
I agree with you on all the points you’ve raised. I confess though that it is so smooth that I typically use it with an EF nib, although sometimes I’ll ink my TWSBI mini classic B with it, too. In a wet writing pen, this goes onto the page very dark blue and I like that very much, but probably, in terms of color, I would rank Mont Blanc Midnight Blue as my top favorite.
I think I’m going to try it with something broader so I can see the color better, luckily it’s in an Al-Star and I can just swap the nib over. I’m curious how it compares to the standard Noodler’s Blue-Black as well as the 54th Mass.
Thanks for commenting!
I was really tempted to get this ink at the DC show last year, but I kinda forgot to get it before I left. I might have to get a sample before I go.
It’s a nice ink, flows nice, writes smooth. It’s just kind of a blue-black to me though, nothing crazy. If you don’t have any other blue-blacks (or are a fan of them) definitely check this one out.
