Pencil Sharpener Review
What is it? The KUM Long Point Pencil Sharpener is just that…a pencil sharpener! What makes this sharpener unique is the ability to sharpen a pencil into a long, precise, and sharp tip with ease. Designed and made in Germany, this sharpener is high quality, portable, and easy to use and clean out.
Notes: I purchased two pencil sharpeners at the same time, this one and the Kutsuwa T’Gaal variable point (check out my review here!). This particular sharpener is a one trick pony, but it’s really good at that one trick. One hole shapes the wood and the other sharpens the lead to a precise writing point. I prefer to write with a very sharp pencil, so I do find myself reaching for this one quite often. The construction is as solid as I’d expect for $4.10 – no complaints here.
Overall, the sharpener does a great job at making and keeping my pencils sharp. The contained unit holds a decent amount of pencil shavings, making it ideal for tossing in a bag and using on the go. I also like that there are two spare blades included with the sharpener, extending the useful life of the product significantly.

Hi, I have a couple of these, they are very good but do take some practice to perfect one’s technique (so I take issue with your “ability to sharpen a pencil…with ease,” at least I needed practice!). Also, the hinged door is extremely flimsy and broke at the hinge on both of mine, which is annoying for an otherwise fine hand sharpener that is fun to use (once you’ve mastered your technique!).
Damn, that’s a shame about the hinge! I haven’t had issues with mine yet, I hope I don’t have them at all.
I agree, there may be a minor learning curve, but after a pencil or two, everyone should get it!

I have one of these and really liked it for a while. The hinge on mine broke, too. After a few months (maybe more), it stopped working for me. The “first step” side was really chewing up the pencil and the “fine point” side wouldn’t sharpen all the way to the end. I changed the blades, but that didn’t my help. I finally had to give up on it.
This looks just like the Palomino one, but at almost half the price. Actually, I think KUM makes the one for Palomino. Either way, the hinge broke on my Palomino one as well, but it’s not a major issue. It’s easy enough to hold the lid on while sharpening. And that long point IS addicting! I love a sharp point too!
