Intro:

I’ve been friendly with Keegan over at One Star Leather Goods for some time now. We got to talking, and he suggested sending over a notebook cover and watch strap for review. As you can see, I was happy to oblige. This is my first year using a Hobonichi Techo, and I wanted a cover to keep it nice for the use that it will be seeing. Let’s take a closer look at this beautifully made cover by One Star Leather.

Oh right, there’s also a giveaway!

Keegan was generous enough to offer up an $80 gift card!
Entry details at the bottom of this post.

I’ve reviewed some pen cases by OSLG before, and I was quite happy with them. I’m just as happy with the notebook cover. OSLG uses the finest leathers from Horween and a few other tanneries. I opted for the natural chromexcel outer and black chromexcel inner. The stitching is waxed blue thread that’s guaranteed for life. Let’s start with the materials. They’re top notch. Chromexcel is a heavily waxed leather and you can tell just by touching it. It’s soft, yet rugged and smells fantastic. The edges aren’t truly burnished, as the leather doesn’t take to it, but they’re polished smooth. The stitching is evenly spaced, tight, and neatly done. Going over the cover, it’s hard to find anything wrong with it.

Usage:

As more time passes, the leather has began to open and close more easily. It was never really hard to open and close, but the small amount of break in has been nice over the past few weeks. The snap closure is sturdy, but not too tight. You can definitely slip a pen in between the strap and the book. The cover is really easy to get on, but do take some care. one-star-leather-goods-notebook-cover-watch-strap-review-3The sleeves(?) that the covers slip into are pretty deep. Why is this a good thing? Because it keeps the notebook firmly planted in place. I opted for my initials in the inside of the cover. You can see how far out the sleeve for the cover extends. It goes nearly to the spine of the book. The cover folds nice and flat, so it does not interfere when writing.

Conclusion and Giveaway!

one-star-leather-goods-notebook-cover-watch-strap-review-8The One Star Leather Goods custom notebook cover is a great home for my Hobonichi. I’m not worried about wearing out the cover of the book. The leather cover not only looks great, but it also provides a nice layer of protection without being overly bulky. I’m really excited to see how the cover wears in over time. It’s nice to have such a quality piece that I can use for years to come!

  1. The Hobonichi Cousin (A5 size) planner cover , fits other A5 notebooks + snap closure + pen loop + card pockets – black/chesnut would be really cool to have. That’s what I would choose.

  2. I want to start by saying good job with all of your products. I just picked up a leather one pen case at the la pen show last Sunday I’ve been using it for two days and love it. If I won the 80 dollar gift card I would buy one of your field notes and wallet covers. I would love for that to be the next addition to my pen collection

  3. Would definitely like to buy the Hobonichi Cousin (A5 size) planner cover with the snap and card slots. Very nice and unique.

  4. Hobonichi Cousin (A5 size) planner cover, fits other A5 notebooks + snap closure + pen loop + card pockets – redbrown/black

Always been a fan of One Star. Thanks for the giveaway!

  5. I’d order a cover for my Hobonichi Weeks edition, but I can’t decide on all the options. Love the ink blue leather, but my practical side says some shade of brown. As for the inside, definitely need a pen loop…pockets are negotiable.

  6. Wow, what a cool shop! I spent way too much time drooling over all of their products. I think my top choice would be the “Pocket Notebook Cover (fits Moleskine softcover Pocket) hand stitched bridle leather – chestnut.”

  7. I would love to get my husband the leather notebook cover for fieldnotes that says “fucking important shit” in chestnut with his initials inside. And I’d also get him the Kaweco sport pen sleeve in black leather. These are fine pieces of workmanship! Even if I don’t win, I’m definitely shopping from here for Christmas this year. Thanks for posting this business!

  8. I would probably spring a little extra and buy a Build-Your-Own notebook cover for a Leuchtturm1917 A5. Thanks for the GAW!

  9. Hard choice…either 1) a cover for my Leuchtturm 1917 journal, or 2) a brown horween two piece watch band to replace the nato strap I have on my black chronograph.

  10. I would get the Notebook cover + pen sleeve, 3.5×5.5″ – hand stitched Horween Chromexcel leather – brown. I want something that will fit a field notes notebook.

  11. One Star Leather is great! I already own a blue six pocket wallet and red Park Sloper Senior. I’d love to get a pen sleeve or nice belt.

  12. I would love a custom A6 cover for my Hobonici Techo. Pen loop and card pockets. I’m not a fan of those snap closures. A nice simple Brown exterior and Brown Bridle interior with blue stitching for a pop of colour.

  13. I really like the notebook covers so if I won I would get an A5 cover. Although there is such a great selection I might change my mind or order several items.

  14. I would definitely do the BUILD-YOUR-OWN – cover for Leuchtturm 1917 (A5) size. I love those notebooks and this would be an elegant cover for them.

  15. Easily, the Simple Leather Cover for Field Notes in bridle leather, and maybe an EDC for my SAK and Space Pen. 🙂 Keegan’s stuff is really nice!

Appreciate another fine review and fun giveaway. Thanks, Ed!

  16. I’d absolutely love to have the Park Sloper in tan leather with no pen holder. Anyone know anything about how easily a Field Notes notebook slides into it? I’ve had problems with other leather cases being really challenging to fit the back cover into the case without damaging the notebook.

  17. Everything! Well, if I had the money anyway. Otherwise, this Hobonichi or the Leuchtturm1917 leather cover will do!

  18. I would definitely pay the extra few bucks to get the Build Your Own A5 cover. These look like great covers; thanks for reviewing.
