Intro:
I’ve been friendly with Keegan over at One Star Leather Goods for some time now. We got to talking, and he suggested sending over a notebook cover and watch strap for review. As you can see, I was happy to oblige. This is my first year using a Hobonichi Techo, and I wanted a cover to keep it nice for the use that it will be seeing. Let’s take a closer look at this beautifully made cover by One Star Leather.
Oh right, there’s also a giveaway!
Keegan was generous enough to offer up an $80 gift card!
Entry details at the bottom of this post.
Materials and Construction:
I’ve reviewed some pen cases by OSLG before, and I was quite happy with them. I’m just as happy with the notebook cover. OSLG uses the finest leathers from Horween and a few other tanneries. I opted for the natural chromexcel outer and black chromexcel inner. The stitching is waxed blue thread that’s guaranteed for life. Let’s start with the materials. They’re top notch. Chromexcel is a heavily waxed leather and you can tell just by touching it. It’s soft, yet rugged and smells fantastic. The edges aren’t truly burnished, as the leather doesn’t take to it, but they’re polished smooth. The stitching is evenly spaced, tight, and neatly done. Going over the cover, it’s hard to find anything wrong with it.
Usage:
As more time passes, the leather has began to open and close more easily. It was never really hard to open and close, but the small amount of break in has been nice over the past few weeks. The snap closure is sturdy, but not too tight. You can definitely slip a pen in between the strap and the book. The cover is really easy to get on, but do take some care.
The sleeves(?) that the covers slip into are pretty deep. Why is this a good thing? Because it keeps the notebook firmly planted in place. I opted for my initials in the inside of the cover. You can see how far out the sleeve for the cover extends. It goes nearly to the spine of the book. The cover folds nice and flat, so it does not interfere when writing.
Conclusion and Giveaway!
The One Star Leather Goods custom notebook cover is a great home for my Hobonichi. I’m not worried about wearing out the cover of the book. The leather cover not only looks great, but it also provides a nice layer of protection without being overly bulky. I’m really excited to see how the cover wears in over time. It’s nice to have such a quality piece that I can use for years to come!
