Nice load out.
I like your taste in inks. Kiwa-Guro and Jentle Grenade are inks which I like a lot.
I have both of the greens featured here, and I usually have a bit of difficulty telling apart F-C Olde Emerald from R&K Alt Goldgrun. The former is a shade darker, ever so slightly.
I have also noticed that F-C performs better than R&K on poor quality paper, in regards to feathering and bleed through.
My methods were not at all scientific though. I had R&K in Kaweco ice Sport 1.1, and F-C in a Noodler’s Ahab (fitted with a Monteverde 1.1 nib)

[…] Notes: I have to admit, I’m at kind of a weird place in my fountain pen “journey”. I’ve actually found pens and inks I’ve been really happy with. There are combos of pen and ink that are really settling in as favorites. I haven’t been changing inks too often, hence the lesser number of loadout posts. This week was different though, there were enough pens that have been loaded with inks I haven’t used before (or in a long time). My favorite combo this week is between the Lamy 2000 loaded with Alt-Goldgrun or the Lamy Al-Star with Ellis Island. Both inks really complement the pens that they’re in very well, and they’re both a pleasure to use. Thank you! I have a 540 in which the grip has cracked three times. They were quick to send out replacements, but it’s just a bummer when they keep breaking. There’s also a crack developing in the body where the piston knob is, which could be a real mess if it makes it to the ink reservoir. When I got the 540, it barely even wrote, so I swapped the nib with a spare Franklin Christoph I had, and now it writes well.

You’re right, it is a shame. There are just a few minor details that could be improved and the pens would be really great!

Thanks for the kind words. They’re a young brand and I like what they’re trying to do, but it’s the second pen I have from them that has fell a bit short of my expectations. I’m going to look for a vintage flex that’ll fit, hopefully that will work out better.

Thanks for the suggestions! I know TWSBI is kind of all over the place in terms of quality control and user experience. I’m going to look into some vintage flex nibs for it, but in the mean time I’ll check out those Knox! Any good place you would recommend to pick them up?

Excellent review Ed. I don’t have a Vac myself, only the 540/580 which I’m pretty happy with. It was very interesting to read your review of this pen though – most things I’ve heard have been positive but then I’ve heard a few people say they had dry nib issues but no one has elaborated much so it was good to read your explanation. That’s a shame huh? I’m relieved my TWSBIs are okay. I always recommend the 540s/580s to people but I guess that’s because I’ve not encountered any issues with them so far. Anyway. I’m rambling. Well done.

I feel the same way that you do about the nib, Ed. The feed is actually fine, but they’ve had some problems with their nibs. I’ve had both of the Medium nibs, and I’ve not been happy with either of them. If you want this pen to really sing, check out the #6 nibs from Knox (or maybe the Goulet nibs, though I haven’t tried them, and they’re JoWo nibs). They’re inexpensive, and they look great. I’ve tried several Knox nibs on this pen, and they make this pen one of my favorites.

Usually, I’m not a big fan of browns, but this one works for me. I think the shades of red in this ink help me like it more though.

J. Herbin across the board has some great shading.

Nice to see a review on one of my favorite inks. Actually I am very fond of J. Herbin’s color family- Lie de The, Terre de Feu and Cafe de Iles. All of these colors are outstanding on the pale ivory of Midori MD paper and the shading does pop. Fortunately all of these inks will shade no matter what the nib size, but but a broad or stub is pretty awesome.

I see you using the Mystery Black a lot. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. I recently used the Diamine green you sent me and the Peacock and loved how they look, with the green being a clear favorite, even closing in on the Oxblood.

How embarassing! Definitely is the B5 size, thanks for the heads up. I knew it was something weird (as in non “Ax” sizes).

I wish I had the time to post a review every day. I do my best to get three posts up a week. It’s tricky balancing everything out so I don’t run through all of my fountain pen stuff too fast, then be “forced” ::wink wink:: to buy more.

I happen to have a bottle of the Vert Empire, I think I’ll need to try them out with each other.

It was actually bought for me along with a bottle of Iroshizuku fuyu-syogun, which happens to pair nicely as well.

I use this ink for my notes related to Buddhism, because it looks a lot like the robes that the monks wear in Thailand. If you’re into ink pairing, it goes nicely with JH Vert Empire.

Ultimately, it’s hit or miss for everyone, and unless the pen is absolutely awful, everyone has a different preference.

I certainly wouldn’t mind paying domestic prices on Seikos and Sailors. There’s a MarineMaster 600 somewhere out there just waiting for me.

Occasionally my G2′s skip, railroad, or clog (fiber buildup from cheap paper), but I’ve always been happy with them. They were the original gel ink pen in the U.S. were they not? Actually I have tried a handful of the Hi-Tec C’s and quite understand why people are so crazy about them even though my preference is for wider widths to write with. The colors are gorgeous and the palette range is unsurpassed. BTW, didn’t JetPens just list a new line of Hi-Tec C’s with a sleeker pen body?

I performed that failed Montblanc transplant so long ago I can’t remember if the cartridge was a ballpoint or gel ink. I was very disappointed how quickly it dried out, and somewhere I have another one but no pen to put it in.

I think I’d like to live in Tokyo and pay domestic prices for Grand Seiko and Ananta, portable Sony electronics, and the welter of stationery goods exclusive to the home market. Why I’d waltz in and out of Bundoki everyday!

Thank you for reading it! Most retractable pens have the blob at the tip, and I can definitely see how people overlook the fact that it’s even there. Have you tried any of Pilot’s Japanese market gel pens? I believe that they have a different formulation of ink (Pilot Hi-Tec-C versus it’s American counterpart, the G-Tec-C). I know there are pretty much equal amounts of love and hate for the Pilot G2 and I understand why. If you haven’t done so, I would check out an offering from Pilot with a narrower tip (.04mm as opposed to the 0.7mm or 1.0mm on the G2). Odd that the MB cartridge dried out so soon though, I know some of the Meisterstuck RT line of ballpoints do not have anything in place to keep the ink from drying out.

Before I keep rambling, thank you for chiming in! Ultimately, I wouldn’t rule out all Pilot gel pens because of a lackluster experience with a G2.
